A calm, impartial two-page brief of what happened overnight, checked before it reaches you.
The editor
By Sunup is edited by Aras Zirgulis, an economist and university lecturer. He reviews every edition before it is sent and is responsible for what it says.
What goes in
Each morning’s brief covers the most important news since the previous edition: the world, Washington, markets and your money, health and science, American life, sports and a short calendar of what’s coming that day. Members choose which of these sections they receive.
We favor what changes something for an ordinary reader over what merely trends. We leave out celebrity gossip and viral outrage.
Our sourcing rule
An item runs only if at least two independent, reputable news organizations or an official primary source plus one independent report confirm it. Names, numbers, dates and quotes are copied from those sources, never estimated. When sources disagree, we say so or leave the detail out. Every item lists its sources, and in the digital edition each source name links to the original story.
Sources we rely on include the Associated Press, Reuters, the major national newspapers and broadcasters, specialist outlets such as STAT and SCOTUSblog, and official releases from agencies such as the Federal Reserve, the Census Bureau, Freddie Mac, CMS and the National Hurricane Center.
Impartiality
We describe what happened and what each side says, in plain words. We avoid loaded adjectives and don’t predict outcomes. Polls are reported with who was surveyed and are treated as snapshots, not forecasts. Nothing in By Sunup is investment, legal or medical advice.
How we use AI
By Sunup is AI-assisted and editor-reviewed. AI tools help us gather reporting from many sources overnight, cross-check facts between them and draft short summaries. A human editor reviews each edition, and our two-source rule applies to every item, whoever or whatever drafted it.
Corrections
